Citing Citrix Systems and Heico Corp., the Fort Lauderdale area moved up two spots to No. 16 on the “hottest hub” ranking recently released by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which studies entrepreneurship.

“Fort Lauderdale is thought of as more of a vacation destination than tech hub, but leading software company Citrix has been based there for well over 20 years,” the Foundation says in its comment on the ranking.

The region was ranked 18th in 1990.

No. 1 hub in the Foundation’s list of “20 Hottest Startup Hubs in America” is — no surprise — San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., the heart of Silcon Valley.
